Declines in Caribbean coral reefs pre-date damage resulting from climate change

Friday, March 30, 2012

The decline of Caribbean coral reefs has been linked to the recent effects of human-induced climate change. However, new research led by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego suggests an even earlier cause. The bad news ? humans are still to blame. The good news ? relatively simple policy changes can hinder further coral reef decline.

Employing a novel excavation technique to reconstruct the timeline of historical change in coral reefs located on the Caribbean side of Panama, a team of scientists led by Scripps alumna Katie Cramer and current Scripps Professor of Oceanography and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Emeritus Staff Scientist Jeremy Jackson has determined that damage to coral reefs from land clearing and overfishing pre-dates damage caused by anthropogenic climate change by at least decades.

"This study is the first to quantitatively show that the cumulative effects of deforestation and possibly overfishing were degrading Caribbean coral and molluscan communities long before climate change impacts began to really devastate reefs," said lead author Cramer, currently based at the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Coral reefs have suffered alarmingly since the 1980s due to coral bleaching and coral disease, thought to stem from the warming of the oceans due to anthropogenic, or human-induced, climate change. However, until recently, the impact of prior human activities on Caribbean coral reefs had not been studied with experimental techniques.

Historical records and qualitative surveys provide hints that declines in corals in some parts of the Caribbean occurred as far back as the early 1900s after coastal lands began to be cleared to make way for plantations. However, the current study is the first to quantify the changes that reef corals and mollusks have undergone as a result of long-term stress caused by the deposition of silt, nutrients, and pollution onto coral reefs from land clearing and the depletion of reef fish that prevent algae from overtaking reefs.

"Because researchers did not really begin to study Caribbean reefs in detail until the late 1970s, we don't have a clear understanding of why these reefs have changed so dramatically since this time," said Cramer. "So, we set out to reconstruct an older timeline of change on reefs by looking at the remains of past reefs ? coral skeletons and mollusk shells."

To reconstruct this timeline, the team dug below modern reefs in incremental layers and, using radiocarbon dating of the coral skeletons they found, linked fluctuations in the types and numbers of coral and mollusks over time to historical records of land clearing. Changes in the relative numbers of these various species represent clear indicators of the overall health of the coral reef.

The team also improved upon the standard technique of taking long, narrow core samples of coral fossils that cannot track fluctuations in the numbers of larger species of coral.

"We wanted to look at the whole complement of the coral community," said Cramer.

To catalog the relative numbers of dozens of coral and molluscan species, the researchers dug two-foot-wide by three-foot-deep pits into reefs at several coastal lagoon and offshore sites near Bocas del Toro, Panama, that were heavily affected and less affected by land runoff, respectively. At each of these sites they also conducted surveys and recorded the composition of living corals.

"We dug up over a ton of coral rubble and tens of thousands of shells," said Cramer, who led the fieldwork at STRI and likened the laborious experience to doing underwater construction.

Systematically sifting through the coral and shell fossils, the scientists noted several indicators of environmental stress, including a decrease in the overall size of bivalves such as oysters, clams, and scallops, a transition from branching to non-branching species of coral, and large declines in the staghorn coral and the tree oyster, which were once the dominant coral and bivalve on these reefs.

These indicators were observed in layers of the excavated pits at coastal lagoon sites that were dated before 1960 and as far back as the 1800s, corresponding to a period of extensive deforestation in the Bocas del Toro region. Similar evidence of environmental stress at offshore sites was dated after 1960, indicating that the negative impacts of land clearing have more recently begun to affect reefs further offshore.

With the decline of the branching coral species, the reefs now have fewer nooks and crannies that are used as habitat for reef fish and other organisms. Also, the non-branching species that have taken their place grow at a much slower rate. "Consequently, there is less of a chance that the reefs will be able to keep up with sea level rise from climate change," said Cramer.

"Because the governments of the world have yet to undertake any meaningful efforts to mitigate climate change, it is of the utmost importance that locally caused stressors to reefs such as overfishing and deforestation are minimized," said Cramer. "Advocating for more intelligent use of land as well as implementing sustainable fisheries management, those are things that can be done right now."

Nielsen: Smartphones account for nearly 50 percent of US mobile phones as of February

Image
Nielsen Mobile Insights' latest statistics are in -- and would you look at that. It's the rise of smartphone owners crossing paths with the decline of those still clinging to their feature-focused devices. According to its latest Smartphone Penetration report, through February 2012, 49.7 percent of US mobile phone owners now sport the "smarter" types (up from only 36 percent a year ago). On a unsurprising note, Nielsen also found that two-thirds of mobile phone buyers in the last three months purchased smartphones over dumbphones. According to its latest report on Smartphone OS shares, of those smartphone purchases, 48 percent of buyers went with Android, 43 percent landed iOS a close second and five percent helped RIM scrape the bottom of the barrel with the remaining four percent listed as "other." That said, it's a only slight deviation from January's numbers, when 51.7 percent of folks went with Android, while 37 percent went for the route leading to Apple. Don't take our word for it, though, there's another graph past the break and full details at the source link below.

Tiger Mauls Wildlife Filmmaker John Varty

A South African conservationist and filmmaker known for daring photography of wild animals is in intensive care after he was attacked by a tiger on his private game reserve.

John Varty, 61, is on a ventilator recovering from surgery for his injuries, including several puncture wounds and two broken ribs.? A spokesperson at his Tiger Canyons reserve described it as a "bad attack," but was hopeful he would be able to make a full recovery.

Varty was recently interviewed by ABC News about his controversial efforts to save endangered animals.? In a report on "Nightline," he is seen sitting on the ground next to his vehicle to photograph a sleeping lion just 15 to 20 feet away.

?

"He knows I'm here," Varty said, acknowledging the risk.? "If he jumped up and went at me, I wouldn't have time to get in the vehicle."

Varty's brother confirmed he was with a film crew at the time of the attack Wednesday but could not say what led to the mauling.

"We don't have the facts as yet. We have just been focused on his recovery," Dave Varty said.

A spokeswoman at the hospital in Bloemfontein where he is being treated told local media he has injuries all over his body, except his face.

Tigers are not native to Africa.? More than a decade ago, Varty established his Tiger Canyons reserve near Philippolis in South Africa's Free State to create a free-roaming habitat for endangered Asian tigers.? Other conservationists are critical of his experiment to get tigers to coexist with Africa's native lions.? Some have criticized his filming techniques and accuse him of manipulating animal behavior to get dramatic footage.

Varty was the "Tiger Man of Africa" in a 2011 National Geographic documentary about his life.? He has produced more than 30 wildlife documentaries, but is most famous for starring alongside Martin Sheen and Brooke Shields in the 1990's film "Running Wild," which he co-wrote and produced.? His autobiography is entitled "Nine Lives."

(AP) ? James Arruda Henry had plenty to be proud of as a lobster boat captain who managed to build his own house and raise a family. But he kept a secret into his 90s, one that forced him to bluff his way through life by day and brought tears at night.

Henry was illiterate. He couldn't even read restaurant menus; he'd wait for someone else to place an order and get the same food. Sometimes he'd go hungry rather than ask for help. Most of his family was none the wiser.

Now he's 98, and his self-published collection of autobiographical essays is being read in elementary schools. "In A Fisherman's Language" details his barefoot beginnings in Portugal, life in a tenement in Rhode Island, boxing as a young man and his adventures at sea.

"I didn't think it was going to go too far," Henry told The Associated Press in a phone interview this week from his home in the Connecticut seaport of Mystic. "I couldn't read or nothing. I tell you, it makes me a very, very happy man to have people call me and write me letters and stuff like that."

Henry said he was taken out of school around the third grade to go to work making concrete blocks, baking bread and doing other jobs. He recalls getting a dollar from his father on the Fourth of July.

"I was so happy that I went straight to the ice cream parlor," he writes in his book. "I got a glass of milk, a piece of apple pie, a dish of ice cream. After I finished eating I had just enough money to buy a small pack of firecrackers. I lit one and they all went off!!"

When he applied for his driver's license, all he could do was put down his name. When a friend told the inspector he was talking to a local "lobster king," Henry managed to take his road test without finishing the application.

Throughout his life, he yearned to read and write but never found the time or opportunity. His nephew, he said, made Henry write him a letter, which took him a month. He found inspiration in a book about the grandson of a slave who became literate at 98. His granddaughter had read him an excerpt of the book, "Life is So Good" by George Dawson.

"I said if he can do it, I can do it," Henry said. "That's when I started to learn."

Henry would stay up until midnight trying to make sense of words. Sometimes he'd fall asleep, the book crashing to the floor.

"That was my job, trying to break the words up," he said. "A lot of nights I cried because I couldn't pronounce the word or know what it meant."

Henry at first practiced the alphabet on his own and relied on a children's dictionary before turning to relatives and tutors for help, granddaughter Marlisa McLaughlin said.

Henry was reading slowly when he approached Mark Hogan, a 69-year-old literacy volunteer, for tutoring in 2010. He said Henry was the one who brought up the idea of a book.

"This has blown me away," Hogan said. "It's been a rewarding experience for me, too. I guess I'm more content with my advancing age when I see what he could do with his."

A granddaughter, Alicia Smith, had the idea of sending the book on a cross-country journey as a literary chain letter of sorts, great-granddaughter Maxine Smith said. A copy started its trip at an elementary school in Connecticut and is heading off Friday to one in Berkeley, Calif.

It has sold 3,000 copies since its publication in November. It's available on Kindle, and Henry plans to send a copy to the White House in the hopes that President Barack Obama will sign it. (No word yet from the White House.) One of the more emotional stories describes Henry's sorrow after his cousin fell overboard and drowned during a fishing run.

"I stayed in bed for at least three weeks," Henry writes in his book. "I just wanted to die myself. My wife kept telling me it wasn't my fault. I done the best I could to save him."

Henry ? who had two daughters with his wife, Jean, who died in 2005 ? now acts as a reading advocate for the young and old. He gives talks to students and this week plans to address an adult education convention in Mystic.

"Don't be afraid to go ahead and try," he said. "It's hard, but once you get the hang of it, you'll enjoy it."

O2-branded Galaxy S II's get ICS update, unlocked UK models left waiting

O2

Owners of O2-branded Samsung Galaxy S II phones should now be able to update to the latest version of Android, the network has announced. Writing on its official Twitter feed, O2 says the update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its Galaxy S II users is now available through Samsung's Kies software. O2 is the second British network to release the update, joining Three, which launched its ICS build last week. T-Mobile UK and Orange are promising the update in April, while Vodafone says it's still testing its version.

However, in a bizarre (and frustrating) turn of events, unlocked Galaxy S II owners in the UK have been left waiting for their update. After informing customers that ICS for unbranded UK phones would be landing last Monday, March 19, Samsung now says it's not able to offer any estimated release date. In a post on its UK Facebook page, the manufacturer assures increasingly impatient users that it's going as fast as it can --

Samsung UK is working hard to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our Galaxy S II customers. We are unable to confirm exact dates as the software testing and approval process is subject to several variables, but we are working as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience.

This development is a reversal of the usual Android update situation. Generally, when a new version is released, unlocked phones are the first to get it, while carrier-branded phones have to wait around a month for additional testing to be carried out. We're not sure exactly what's holding up the ICS release for unbranded British devices, as the update has already landed in many other countries, including Poland, Hungary, Sweden, and Korea.

Impatient Galaxy S II owners can always change their CSC code and apply another region's ICS update directly through the ODIN utility. Or for those feeling brave, there's also the option to root and install an ICS ROM directly through a custom recovery. (If you don't know what any of that means, you're probably better off sticking it out on Gingerbread until Samsung releases the official update package.)

As ever, Galaxy S II phones in the U.S. have a little longer to wait for their updates, on account of the hardware differences from carrier to carrier. Leaked builds for certain devices have started to appear over the past few days, though, which is a good sign.

Galaxy S II users, be sure to shout out in the comments and let us know if you've received your ICS update yet.

The advantages and disadvantages of the two popular diets | xiaoke ...

There are a number of popular diets around and people are usually after the ?celebrity diet? last, but each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages:

Atkins Diet:

Probably one of the most popular diets in recent years, the Atkins diet works on the theory that eating too many carbohydrates in the body burn the results of some carbohydrates for energy storage and fat and the rest. The Atkins Diet is divided into four phases: Phase 1 ? Induction Phase 2 ? weight loss in progress, Phase 3 ? Pre-Maintenance, and Phase 4 ? Lifetime Maintenance. The induction phase Dieter limited to only eating 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. There may be improvements in the levels of some cholesterol diet have, despite the high fat food.

The theory behind the food (or GI) GI is that foods such as effects on the growth of blood glucose levels ? dramatically, moderately or very little. Foods that have a dramatic effect in raising blood sugar have a high value of the glycemic index, while foods that have little influence at a low value. Foods with a low blood sugar gradually release the body to feel fuller. This reduces the desire to snack on high GI value than causing quick bursts of energy due to the rapid rise in blood sugar. This leads to a lack of energy and hunger to come back much faster than low GI foods. People who continue to eat low GI foods are less likely to snack, and then keep the weight down.

Advantages:

?The GI diet is not to limit certain types of foods and there are always other ways to produce food of high quality.
?There are also reports that the GI diet can help to call for reducing the risk of stroke, diabetes and some cancers of the colon.

John Cena Says Vote Metallica In Musical March Madness ... Or Else

WWE superstar gives props to band's 'in-your-face, time-to-fight music.' Voting in round two ends Sunday at midnight!
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rob Markman

Voting in the second-round of MTV's Musical March Madness is entering the home stretch and, well, it's not looking good for Metallica. After disposing of fellow titans Guns N' Roses in round one, James Hetfield and company currently trail upset-minded Sum 41 by an "Unforgiven"-size margin ... and appear headed for the void.

Of course, there's still plenty of time to change things — voting in all second-round matchups closes Sunday at midnight ET — and, as luck would have it, Metallica are getting support from a rather unlikely source: WWE superstar John Cena, who would like to strongly encourage you to vote for his favorite band. And we mean strongly.

"If you don't vote Metallica strong, you ain't been around music. They're my vote to take it," Cena told MTV News. "Because, like I say, I use music for energy. I'm involved in a lot of physical activity, a lot of times when you're tired, you need to find energy from somewhere, and music evokes emotion. And Metallica, I don't care who you are, they play 'Enter Sandman' at Yankee Stadium, and it's a wrap."

So no offense to Sum 41, but for Cena, there's nothing quite like the surge of "Sandman." And while he's probably got his mind on other things (like his year-in-the-making match with the Rock at WrestleMania XXVIII), he'll be pulling for Metallica to make a comeback and advance to the Sweet 16. Why?

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

"[Their music] transcends race, creed, color, sex, age; it's just hard-hitting, in-your-face, time-to-fight music," he snarled. "That's my type of stuff right there."

And who's man enough to disagree with that?

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

Barcelona looking to cash in on Madrid's struggles

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:05 p.m. ET March 22, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Led by the insatiable Lionel Messi, Barcelona will seek to end a perfect week on Saturday by winning at Mallorca to pile the pressure on Real Madrid after the stumbling Spanish league leader drew back-to-back matches.

Messi broke Barcelona's all-time scoring record in helping the three-time defending champions cut Madrid's lead from 10 to six points in the past two rounds.

"There are 10 games left and we have to try to take away the highest number of points possible," Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara said. "We can only concentrate on our games."

Madrid hosts Real Sociedad later on Saturday in need of a win after conceding late goals from free kicks to drop points to Malaga and Villarreal this week.

Madrid will play the match without coach Jose Mourinho, defender Sergio Ramos and midfielder Mesut Oezil. They will all be serving one-game suspensions after being sent off at the end of the ill-tempered 1-1 draw at Villarreal on Wednesday.

Pepe could also face suspension and miss the game against Sociedad after reportedly insulting the referee following the match at El Madrigal stadium.

That would leave Madrid without both starting center backs and two of its most dangerous attacking players, with winger Angel Di Maria still sidelined by a nagging injury.

"They are two of the best center backs in the world, but we are talking about Real Madrid and their bench players are also very good," said Sociedad forward Carlos Vela, whose team has lost its past four games away from Anoeta stadium.

"It's going to be tough even if they don't play. We will have to have a perfect game to take away a positive result."

Despite the consecutive draws, defender Marcelo said Madrid is still on course for its first league title in four years.

"I think that any team would like to have a six-point lead," Marcelo said. "We have to stay calm. We didn't win, but the team's spirit is high."

Messi scored his eighth hat trick of the season in the 5-3 win over Granada on Tuesday to reach 234 career goals for Barcelona, passing a milestone that had stood for 57 years in the 113-year history of the club.

The Argentine forward has scored 17 goals during an eight-game winning streak for Barcelona.

This month, Messi set a Champions League record by scoring five times in one game. With 34 goals in the league so far and 10 games to go, he now has his sights set on the league record of 40 in one season, set by Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo last year.

"Messi is the one," Thiago said. "He is a player that has made history, and he will continue to do so."

Mallorca is now playing its best football in an up-and-down season. Joaquin Caparros' team has won its past two games and is unbeaten in four rounds.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola will have to find new defenders with Dani Alves suspended, Adriano injured and Eric Abidal awaiting a liver transplant.

Last-place Zaragoza hosts Atletico Madrid on Sunday hoping to build on its 2-1 victory at Valencia on Wednesday, coming from behind to win thanks to Antonio "Apono" Galdeano's double despite playing with 10 men for more than an hour.

The much-needed victory lifts Zaragoza to within five points of safety.

"We can't puff out our chests since we are still at the bottom of the table," Zaragoza coach Manolo Jimenez.

Levante's coach and players have insisted all season that their goal is avoiding the drop, and they can strengthen their hold on fourth place and Spain's last Champions League spot with a third consecutive win against Osasuna on Sunday.

Marcelo Bielsa's Athletic Bilbao will look to end a three-game losing run at home against relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon.

Also on Sunday, it's: Espanyol vs. Malaga, Rayo Vallecano vs. Villarreal and Real Betis vs. Racing Santander.

Third-place Valencia visits Getafe in Saturday's late game.

Granada hosts Sevilla on Monday to finish the round.

10 Ways to Re-ignite Your Passion | 303 MAGAZINE

Has that burning desire you once had for each other been reduced to a pile of ashes? Is it possible to stoke those dying embers and get that fire raging again? Long-term committed relationships aren?t easy, but regardless of the divorce statistics, they are still the American ideal.? If you?ve ever been in one, however, you know how challenging it is to keep that fire stoked. ?A lot of people ask me what the secret is to keeping a sex life spicy in a monogamous or committed relationship. Since the passion is so natural in the beginning of a relationship, we have a tendency to think it should always be that way. Unfortunately, that?s not the case, but anything worth having is worth working for. Why would your relationship with the most important person in your life be any different?

Instead of blaming the lack of desire on your partner, take responsibility for your sex life the way you would take responsibility for your career or your family?s well-being. You don?t have to be Einstein to know that doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insane. If you really love your partner, maybe it?s time to take a stand and make some changes before one of you ends up having an affair, or simply throws? in the towel for good.

After living in the same space for the last 2 ? years, just this week, I had some accent walls painted with vibrant colors. It was amazing how everything in the room seemed to become more attractive because of the new backdrop. It was an easy and inexpensive fix compared to buying all new furniture or moving. I am suddenly inspired to organize every room and closet, and seem to have energy and focus for all those tasks I?ve been avoiding like the plague for the past year. It?s amazing how one small change can be completely transformational and rejuvenating. I was talking to a friend about this, and we got on the topic of how the same thing applies to one?s sex life. Change the backdrop and everything about the experience could feel new and exciting again. ?

So if your sex life needs a fresh coat of paint or your passion could use a little lighter fluid to get that fire burning again, here are some ideas:

  1. Change the backdrop:? Try having sex in a different room. If you always have sex in bed, try the desk in your home office, the floor in the living room, the kitchen counter, or the back of the mini-van parked in your garage.
  2. Burn some calories: Take a long lunch and meet at a hotel or at home, if possible, and have each other for lunch. If one of you has a private office, do it there. It can be titillating to feel like you?re doing something naughty with the risk of getting caught.
  3. Don?t get naked: If you are in the habit of getting naked, jumping into bed and doing it, try seducing one another with your clothes on. For the ladies reading this, I would suggest that you wear a skirt w/ thigh high stockings or a garter belt and no panties, for easy access. Or take your time in undressing one another. It is also very erotic to be naked when your partner is fully clothed.
  4. Rewrite the script: If you have a particular style or habit you get into when having sex w/ your partner, change it to the exact opposite. For example, if you typically joke around and laugh a lot during sex, try having serious sex. My ex-husband and I were like Ricky and Lucy, even in bed, so one night I told him he wasn?t allowed to say anything, crack jokes, laugh, or even smile. I wanted movie-style sex. It was one of the most memorable nights of sex we ever had.
  5. Improvisational acting: Try a theme night or role-playing to bring your fantasies to life. Create a scenario where you each get to be whoever you want to be for the evening, or assign roles to each other.? For themes or characters you can use a movie, like Pirates of the Caribbean or a Bond flick for instance.
  6. Let the games begin: Play a game that you both end up winning. If you?re not comfortable or imaginative enough for role-play, there are plenty of sexy games out there.? One I?ve tried is Strip Chocolate which can be found in adult toy stores and online. A friend of mine told me that she and her husband play strip Band Hero. Or keep it simple and play strip poker. Almost any game can be turned into a sexy adventure.
  7. Plan an indoor picnic: Spread a blanket on the living room floor and have a picnic with erotic foods that you can feed each other, or eat off one another.
  8. Have an affair: With each other. ?If you have children, get an overnight sitter and stay at a hip hotel, or a cozy B & B. It doesn?t have to be far from home. Order room service and pretend that you are on your honeymoon or having an affair. If you are comfortable with role-playing, go to the bar separately, act as though you just met and you?re taking a total stranger back to your room.
  9. Lights, camera, action: Change the lighting. For example if you always make love in the dark, try it by candlelight or with the lights on or drapes open.? If you?re feeling daring, set up the home video camera and make a movie. Watching it later could put you in the mood again.
  10. For the more adventurous :? Try having sex discretely in a public place.? I once had sex in the men?s room at a hardware store and I?ll never forget it. It gives a whole new meaning to going to Home Depot or Lowes to get wood.

Trying new things can sometimes be uncomfortable, but living a life without passion is so much worse. If everything in your relationship is good and boring sex is your major issue, get over yourself and take a risk. Be open-minded and have some fun. Even if something feels silly, it could lead to uncontrollable laughter and a fun memory to share with your partner for years to come.

(AP) ? "CSI" creator Anthony Zuiker is making a movie destined for the small screen.

The creator of the hit CBS television show plans to debut the as-yet-unfinished feature, "Cybergeddon," on Yahoo in installments this fall. His latest foray into online storytelling follows his partnership on a horror series for YouTube.

It also marks Yahoo's second stab at tapping Hollywood talent to create original online video. In January, Yahoo said a series of 20 animated webisodes developed by Tom Hanks called "Electric City" would debut on the site this spring.

Many Web video companies, including Hulu, YouTube and Netflix, are pushing to put more original video content online as they compete for people's attention with traditional outlets like TV channels.

Zuiker and Yahoo consider the online movie debut to be similar to a release in theaters.

"Instead of 5,000 theater screens, you can wake up to 50 million screens in one day," Zuiker says.

Zuiker is the movie's executive producer, but hasn't found a director or actors yet.

Unlike a movie, viewers won't be charged admission. But the movie will come with ads, including ones from the maker of the Norton AntiVirus program, Symantec Corp. The movie's episodes may also be sprinkled through different Yahoo properties such as its finance, news and entertainment sites.

Along with regular video ads, a character playing a Norton employee will have a "small but impactful" role in the movie, Zuiker says.

The plot revolves around a female government agent who has a falling out with the law and is on the run herself, while pursuing a master hacker who wants to bring the world to its cyber-knees.

Yahoo Inc. has been struggling to boost the revenue it gets from advertising as competitors like Google Inc. and Facebook have cut into its display ad business. It is trying especially to go after video advertisements, because advertisers tend to pay more for them than static display ads.

Erin McPherson, Yahoo's head of video, said Yahoo will distinguish itself from sites like YouTube and Hulu by creating more content like games and text to go with the videos on its different services, including perhaps its email and messaging programs.

Yahoo did something similar when it put up stories about the Clinton family around the time it aired the Clinton Foundation's concert online in October.

"If you want to sign up for the 'Cybergeddon' experience, you could be surrounded by this storytelling on the Yahoo digital platform," she said.

Mets make deal with Madoff trustee

The settlement avoids a civil trial for the club and means they'll have to pay far less than they otherwise might.

The New York Mets' owners scored an early-season victory Monday, stabilizing the club's financial future in a deal with a trustee for Bernard Madoff's fraud victims that requires them to pay millions less than they might have ? and lifts a dark cloud from a team whose dismal play seemed to mirror its misfortune in the owner's box.

Mets CEO Fred Wilpon and team President Saul Katz, co-majority owners, emerged smiling from a Manhattan federal courthouse after a judge announced the agreement, which makes it likely they'll pay much less than the agreed-upon $162 million, if any at all; guarantees they will owe nothing until the end of four years; and averts a high-profile civil trial.

"Now I guess I can smile, maybe I can take a day off, but I can't wait to get back to our businesses, which I love," Wilpon, sporting dark sunglasses, said outside court as he pledged to rejoin the Mets on Tuesday at spring training in Florida. He stood with Katz, who rested his hand on Wilpon's shoulder under a sunny sky.

RELATED:?Baseball spring training: The facts, from history to cheap seats

After speaking, Wilpon gave a nod to the sagging faith some have had in recent years with owners who seemed mired in accusations that they knew Madoff was up to no good but kept silent because they were making lots of money on their investment.

"Stick with us," he said.

In a lawsuit that demanded $1 billion from the Mets owners, Picard said Wilpon and Katz had meetings with Madoff in his office at least once a year, a privilege few investors enjoyed, and that Katz at times spoke directly with Madoff at least once a day.

Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence after revealing in December 2008 that he cheated thousands of investors of roughly $20 billion for years.

The judge noted the end of acrimony as he read a document that promised neither side will disparage the other or the agreement and that Picard will no longer accuse the Mets owners of being "willfully blind," a legal term central to the civil trial the deal eliminated. The litigation could have forced the team's owners to pay up to $383 million.

"All I have to say is, love is wonderful," U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff said, smiling.

The deal was shaped so that the team's owners could owe much less than the $162 million they received in fictitious profits in the six years before Madoff's fraud was revealed.

The agreement calls for the sum to be reduced by money that would otherwise be paid for $178 million in losses claimed on behalf of dozens of accounts held in the name of defendants in the action against Sterling Partners, a business entity that includes the Mets owners, along with real estate, sports media and private equity interests.

David J. Sheehan, the lawyer for trustee Irving Picard, told the judge that $10 million in losses by Sterling Partners that was recovered by the trustee was already set for disbursement, an amount that would reduce the Mets owners' debt to $152 million.

The trustee says he has recovered 52 percent, or $9 billion, of claimed principal losses by all Madoff investors. More than $6 billion more has been identified but not yet secured.

Light Calorie Cooking ? Great Healthy Meals For The Entire Family ...

Given the increased health risks of today?s environment, eating healthy has become a priority for many, and it can sometimes be hard to find delicious low calorie foods. The way to get low calorie foods that taste great is through light calorie cooking. There are a few tips to consider when embarking on light calorie cooking adventures where the calories are low but the taste is high.

Margarine Si, Butter No!

When following recipes when preparing a meal, there are many recipes that now list a choice between using butter as an ingredient or margarine. By using margarine in the recipe instead of butter the cook cuts the caloric content significantly yet still keeps a good taste overall. It is very hard to tell the difference between margarine and butter that is used in cooked foods and since margarine is lower in calories it is a great substitute. So, the next time you are cooking and run across a choice between butter or margarine as an ingredient make the healthy and low calorie choice by using margarine. The taste will remain great and it won?t affect your waistline!

Splenda ? As An Alternative Sweetener

A second tip that could help you reduce the caloric content of the meals you cook is to use Splenda ? as a sugar substitute. Splenda ? is the most common brand of sucralose, a sugar alternative only approved for sale in the late ?90s. It retains the sweet taste of sugar without increasing caloric content. You can also use Splenda ? when baking because it remains stable in heat and doesn?t lose its flavor in the baking process. That said, Splenda ? is the best cooking alternative if you need to cook a recipe that has sugar as a primary or secondary ingredient. The difference is negligible, and allows you to enjoy sweet food and drinks without the excess calories.

These are just two ways among many others that could help you cook light calorie meals that retain their great taste without having you risk gaining some excess weight.

Enjoy Flirty Aprons review for aprons for men, women and children, as well as some pretty fantastic looking gloves to protect your hands.
