CLEARWATER, Fla. -- As low, dark-gray clouds moved in and settled over Bright House Field, a new group of Phillies began batting practice. Jim Thome was part of that particular collection of hitters. He took his usual Paul-Bunyan sized swings, big and powerful, but he was not the first baseman who drew the most attention.

Shortly before 11 a.m., a familiar face stepped to the plate. He was dressed in a full uniform for the first time since the Phillies season ended last October with an unexpected and disappointing defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals. Ryan Howard took his first live batting practice swings of spring training on Wednesday. He eased into it, slapping a few hits to different parts of the outfield. Then he mashed a ball over the right-field wall and crushed another onto the grassy incline just beyond the power-alley in left-center.

?It felt good,? Howard said during a press conference on Wednesday. ?The swing feels good.?

It was only spring training batting practice, a brief moment in a long season, and yet it was a startling thing to witness. It made for a stark contrast to the last time Howard appeared on a baseball field. That was an unfortunate scene -- Howard crumpled on the ground, clutching his ruptured right Achilles tendon, while the Cardinals celebrated their NLDS win over the stunned Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. As symbolism goes, it?s hard to imagine something uglier and more powerful. Howard was asked whether he?s seen the footage of that moment, or whether it remains too painful to watch.

?It was painful when it happened,? Howard quipped, ?I can tell you that.??????????? ?

Even before the injury, Howard had his detractors -- those who think he?s overvalued and overpaid (his five-year, $125 million extension kicks in this year). Last year, Howard hit .253 with 33 homers, 116 RBIs and an OPS of .835. He?s 32 years old. Albert Pujols is also 32. He hit .299 with 37 homers, 99 RBIs and a .906 OPS a year ago. Prince Fielder, 27, hit .282 with 38 homers, 120 RBIs and a .981 OPS. You can see where this is going.

During the off-season, Ruben Amaro defended Howard and his contract against those who think he?s not nearly as good as Pujols or even Fielder. And on Tuesday Charlie Manuel said he thinks Howard?s ?best years are still ahead of him.?

Maybe Amaro and Manuel are right, or maybe they?re just putting a happy face on a sad situation that has to concern the organization even if no one wants to say so publicly. Whatever you may think of Howard -- whether you believe he?s one of the game?s best sluggers or you?re an intractable WAR advocate who yammers incessantly about him being overrated -- it?s hard to deny what he means to the Phillies and their lineup.

Last year, he accounted for 16.3 percent of the team?s RBIs and 21.5 percent of its home runs. That?s a significant chunk of the offense. And if you?re among the naysayers, you should also consider that 19 of his 34 homers (which includes the playoffs) in 2011 either tied a game or helped give the Phillies the lead. It?s hard to imagine any combination of Thome, Ty Wigginton, John Mayberry and Jimmy Unnamed Fill-in Player replacing that kind of production while Howard is out of the lineup.

Even more worrisome: What if Howard isn?t himself when he finally returns? What then? The Phillies, as everyone knows, weren?t the same unstoppable hitting machine in 2011 that they were in years past -- and that was when Howard was healthy. You have to wonder what the offense might look like if Howard can?t put up the numbers the Phils have always counted on him to produce. (He?s had six straight seasons with at least 30 home runs and 100 RBIs.)

Howard said he isn?t concerned about his hitting and added that he feels fine swinging a bat. That?s an encouraging thing to hear. But he also said that healing his Achilles has been a complicated process, and it isn?t over yet. That is decidedly less encouraging.

?It?s kind of like learning how to run all over again,? Howard said. ?I?ve been walking with a limp for the most part after being in the boot for two months. You kind of have to get rid of that gimp, that little limp that you have going. Right now, strength-wise it?s starting to come. But I?m taking it slow.?

His words -- that he?s getting stronger, but that he has to re-teach himself how to run -- said so much. In addition to the oral report about his health, Howard provided a strong visual clue concerning the status of his rehabilitation. At the press conference, Howard wore a light gray shirt. On the chest, there was a message stamped in black block letters: ?Wounded Warrior Project.?

LONDON (AP) -Manchester United says Wayne Rooney will miss the Europa League match against Ajax on Thursday because of a throat infection.

Rooney became ill following last week's 2-0 victory in the first leg of the last-32 match in Amsterdam. He was sent home despite reporting for training on Wednesday morning.

United manager Alex Ferguson says Rooney "has a really bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam and we gave him some medication but it got worse. He has been in bed over the weekend."

United has a Premier League match against Norwich and Ferguson says "we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday."

The Premier League champions are two points behind Manchester City in the title race.

`Using religion for vested interests a norm in Pakistan'

It is unfortunate that using religion for vested interests has become a norm in Pakistan, said a daily.

An editorial in the Daily Times said that it took almost seven years for a French woman to get her daughter?s custody.

Amna, an 11-year-old girl, is the daughter of Ingrid Brainden Burjer and Pakistani Abdul Razzaq who married in 1999 and later divorced. A court in France gave Amna?s custody to the mother, but in 2005, Razzaq fled France with his daughter.

A Pakistani court also ruled in the mother?s favour in 2009 but Razzaq did not comply with the court?s order. After the Lahore High Court also ruled in Burjer?s favour, she was finally able to take her daughter back to France.

The editorial said that Razzaq?s counsel argued in court that since Amna?s mother is a Christian woman, she cannot raise a Muslim child.

"...This begs the question whether the father?s argument was based on a religious or legal principle."

"Unless there are cogent reasons, a child cannot be taken away from a mother?s custody in case of a divorce or separation between a couple. It is unfortunate that using religion for vested interests has become a norm in Pakistan," the editorial added.

Burjer was helped by another French woman who had to face a similar predicament.

Noting that there is "a pattern here", the editorial observed that many Pakistani men living abroad end up marrying foreign women.

"In case of a divorce, some of them resort to illegal abduction of their children and surreptitiously moving back to Pakistan with them. This is not just morally wrong, it is also illegal.

"People cannot circumvent the law based on a spurious argument about religious differences. It is best to have a mutually accommodating arrangement with visiting rights but a minor child?s custody cannot be taken away from a mother just because of the religion card.

"The ?mother principle? trumps religion," the editorial said.

My three daughters recently become Girl Scouts so I knew that selling cookies was in our future. In fact, I foolishly looked forward to it. After all, what could be more American?

It?s the time of year that instills dread and fear in the hearts of parents across the country. College applications? No. Winter exams? No ? much more stressful. It?s the annual Girl Scout Cookie sales drive.

My three daughters recently become Girl Scouts and Brownies so I knew that selling cookies was in our future. In fact, I foolishly looked forward to it. After all, what could be more American?

But our excitement quickly waned when we found out just how many boxes the girls were expected to sell. To make matters worse, news of the incredibly high sales quotas was followed by fantastic tales of over-zealous scouts selling upward of 700 boxes each.

These had to be fish stories. Children are prone to exaggeration, right? Turns out they weren?t. Evidently, the parents of these super bionic salesgirls took the order forms to their offices and gently suggested that their subordinates make purchases.

?Uh, sure, Mr. Jenkins, put me down for 12 of your daughter?s $4.00 cookie boxes. I?ll just eliminate one of my medications so I can afford them. I?ve been meaning to try some home remedies I?ve heard about anyway.?

That wasn?t going to happen in our house. These girls needed to sell cookies the old-fashioned way, door-to-door, facing success and rejection head-on as originally intended.

We headed out on day one, eager to make a sale and finally meet those neighbors. After all, what better way to get to know them than to ask them for money? Off we went, plotting a course down our San Francisco-like hilly street, pen and lengthy blank order form in hand.

It?s funny; I never noticed all the security gates and fencing encircling many of our neighbors? properties before. These Buckingham Palace-like homes were intimidating. We rationalized that after spending so much money on elaborate fencing, they probably could not afford cookies so we skipped these houses. Besides, their intercom technology confused us.

Not easily discouraged, I suggested we try the next street over, one that is even steeper than our own. But soon the girls started to get winded and whiny, and I could tell they were losing their will to live, let alone sell a box of cookies. We passed three more gated properties and struck out at two empty houses before reaching the highest point ? and house ? of the street.

We rang the doorbell and waited, panting. Finally, we heard the wonderful sound of footsteps coming to answer the door.

A friendly dad-like figure greeted us. Yeah! Our first sale!

Or so we thought. ?Oh, Girl Scout cookies? I think my wife may have bought some already. Why don?t you come back in an hour?? he said casually, as if it he had never noticed that he lived on a street that rivals Mt. McKinley.

?Oh sure. Thanks.? I said through gritted teeth and walked away. Then, with the door shut, I lost it.

?Why don?t you come back in an hour?? I said mockingly over and over again. ?He?s got a million dollar house, a Hummer in the driveway, and he can?t fork out four measly bucks for a box of cookies? Why that?? My kids had to grab a hold of me to calm me down. I think one of them may have slapped me.

?Let it go, Mom. It?s okay. There will be other sales. Don?t worry.? My kids said, quite sympathetically.

But I knew better. This old-fashioned door-to-door crap wasn?t going to cut it. If I had any hope of meeting those quotas I was going to have to give in and take point on this project.

Unfortunately, neither my husband nor I have, um, regular jobs or co-workers to pester so I had to throw myself on the mercy of my friends and relatives. I sent out this email:

Dear Friends and Family:

As you may know, Samantha, Chloe, and Peyton have joined the Girl Scouts and Brownies. The annual Girl Scout Cookie sale has begun, and we need to satisfy a sales quota for each child. To that end, I ask that each of you buy 56 boxes. I?ve attached an order form for your convenience. (And, please include photocopies of two forms of identification with your personal check, especially you Uncle Walter.)

Strangely, the orders have been slow coming. But I believe this whole adventure has been a good learning experience for the kids ? something about business successes and failures. Or the importance of living on flat streets ? I?m not sure which.

But, I do know one thing ? I won?t be buying all the unsold cookies myself. I?ve heard of lots of parents doing exactly that. No way.

That?s what grandparents are for.

Rick Santorum Contraception Stance Remains Out Of Step With ...

WASHINGTON ? Most Americans don't share Rick Santorum's absolutist take on abortion. He's out of step on women in combat. He questions the values of the two-thirds of mothers who work. He's even troubled by something as commonplace as birth control ? for married couples.

Even among a Republican presidential field anxious to please religious conservatives, Santorum's ideas stand out.

A Catholic father of seven whose kids are home-schooled, Santorum may seem to wear his conservatism as comfortably as his sweater vests. But he's walked a careful path, keeping the more provocative opinions that helped sink his re-election to the Senate in 2006 mostly out of his presidential campaign.

That is until he leaped to the top of the polls, alongside Mitt Romney.

Now Santorum's record on social issues is getting a closer look. On several matters, he's outside the Republican mainstream. And if he becomes the GOP nominee, some of his ideas would likely be surprising, even puzzling, to general election voters.

BIRTH CONTROL

_ Santorum: Says he wouldn't try to take away the pill or condoms. But he believes states should be free to ban them if they want. He argues that the Supreme Court erred when it ruled in 1965 that Americans have a right to privacy that includes the use of contraceptives.

Birth control, even within marriage, violates his beliefs as a Catholic. Last year Santorum told the Christian blog Caffeinated Thoughts that as president he would warn the nation about "the dangers of contraception" and the permissive culture it encourages. "Many of Christian faith have said, `Well, that's OK. Contraception is OK,'" he said. "It's not OK. It's a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. ... If it's not for purposes of procreation, then you diminish this very special bond between men and women."

Santorum said Friday on "CBS This Morning" that as a senator he had supported federal funding of birth control services but he also wants to promote abstinence "as a healthier alternative."

_ Catholics: Despite the church's teachings, 84 percent of U.S. Catholics believe a person who uses artificial birth control can still be a good Catholic, according to a CBS News poll. And 89 percent of Catholic women favor expanding access to birth control for those who can't afford it, the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found.

_ All Americans: Almost everyone uses it. Three-fourths of U.S. women have taken the pill, the CBS News poll says, and other studies show virtually all sexually active women have used some type of birth control. A mere 8 percent of Americans think birth control is morally wrong, according to a Pew Research Center poll this month. Four in 10 say it's not even a moral issue these days.

WORKING WOMEN

_ Santorum: His 2005 book, "It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good," suggests parents in two-income families aren't doing what's best for the kids. Too often, he writes, both parents work when the family could get by on one salary: "For some parents, the purported need to provide things for their children simply provides a convenient rationalization for pursuing a gratifying career outside the home." He described it as a sad situation created by "radical feminists" who undermined the traditional family by "convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."

Santorum's unsuccessful re-election bid took a hit from a rival's TV ad featuring a working mother challenging the senator "to come to my house at the end of the month when we're doing our bills and tell me how we can live on one income." Santorum recently tried to deflect questions about the book by saying that his wife, who left her nursing career to care for their children, helped write that section because she felt her decision to become a stay-at-home mom wasn't valued by society. He predicted a Santorum administration would have "plenty of working moms."

_ All Americans: Two-thirds of married mothers with husbands are working or looking for jobs, according to the Labor Department. Like Santorum, most Americans don't think it's best for children when moms work full time; they're divided over whether staying at home or working part time is ideal. But more moms are working for economic reasons than personal satisfaction. Half of full-time working mothers would rather work part time, and a third would prefer to stay home, according to a 2009 Pew Research Center poll. About 1 in 10 of the moms working full-time says it's an ideal situation.

WOMEN IN COMBAT

_ Santorum: Spoke out against women in combat when the Pentagon announced plans to allow them to serve closer to the front. He says he worries that fighting men will be distracted by their "natural instinct" to protect women. He also says the differences in physical abilities between men and women aren't being taken into account.

_ Republicans: Six in 10 would allow women to serve in units that engage in close combat; about a third are opposed, a Quinnipiac University poll last year found.

_ All Americans: Slightly more favorable toward women in combat than Republicans.

GAYS IN THE MILITARY

_ Santorum: Wants to reinstate the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that banned openly gay service members. In a GOP debate in Florida, Santorum said lifting the ban was social engineering and that "sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military." He added: "Keep it to yourself whether you're a heterosexual or a homosexual."

_ Republicans: Santorum's party is divided on the issue. A CBS News poll gave a 48-41 edge to supporters of gays serving in the military. Republicans who felt strongly about the issue were twice as likely to support gays in the military than to oppose them, however.

_ All Americans: An overwhelming number ? 68 percent ? favor allowing gays to serve openly, the same poll found.

ABORTION

_ Santorum: Favors amending the Constitution to ban abortion. He says that human life begins at conception and doctors who perform abortions should be charged as criminals. In his book, he compared women who have abortions to 19th-century slaveholders, writing that "unlike abortion today, in most states even the slaveholder did not have the unlimited right to kill his slave." In the past, Santorum supported allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest, but he now says no to those exceptions.

_ Republicans: Although united in the belief that abortion should be illegal in most cases ? two-thirds say so ? an overwhelming majority of Republicans are willing to make some exceptions. Only a fifth say abortion should always be illegal, according to AP-GfK polling in August.

_ All Americans: Even less likely to say there should be no abortions at all ? 16 percent support a total ban. About half of Americans want abortion to be legal in most cases, and almost as many say it should be mostly illegal.

Unemployment benefits 101: When will your state cut off extended benefits?

Congress is nearing a deal to extend long-term unemployment benefits to the end of the year. But many states plan to cut off the benefits well before Dec. 31.?

For some long-term unemployed, news that?congressional negotiators have worked out a deal to extend long-term unemployment benefits through the end of the year will be less significant than it appears.?

Regardless of Tuesday's agreement on Capitol Hill, many states are set to pare back extended benefits well before the end of the year, due to the formulas by which they determine benefits.?

In short, state formulas say that extended unemployment benefits ? those that currently take effect after 79 weeks of unemployment ? will only be offered if state unemployment is 10 percent higher than it was in the same quarter any time in the past three years.

Congressional negotiators could have changed this, extending the look-back period to four years ? when the unemployment rate was much lower. They decided not to do so.

Many states had already eliminated paying extended benefits of up to 99 weeks because their unemployment rate had dipped below the required threshold. On Saturday, two more states ? Maine and Michigan ? will stop paying extended benefits. By the end of June, 25 more states will be eliminating the 99 weeks of benefits.

By the end of the year, if Congress approves the deal, the states with the highest unemployment rates will be capping their benefits at 73 weeks.

The National Employment Law Project puts the number of people on extended benefits at 512,463.
