(AP) ? A victorious Mitt Romney sounded every bit the presumptive Republican nominee after triumphing over Newt Gingrich in Tuesday's Florida primary.

"I stand ready to lead this party and to lead our nation," Romney told the jubilant crowd gathered at the Tampa Convention Center, all but calling on the fractured GOP to rally behind his candidacy.

The former Massachusetts governor, who lost to Gingrich in South Carolina just 10 days ago, also tried to cast what's expected to be a long and bitter nomination fight as a positive for the Republican Party.

"A competitive primary does not divide us. It prepares us," Romney said after a relentlessly negative fight for all of Florida's delegates to the GOP nominating convention this summer.

He suggested that negative attacks by the remaining candidates in the race ? Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul ? would be a test for his candidacy that would prepare him for the general election rather than a gift to Democratic President Barack Obama.

Romney also offered what might be his most definitive argument yet for his presidential candidacy: Only he could lead the GOP and the country. His brief speech was filled with direct contrasts with Obama, specifically on the topic of leadership.

"My leadership helped build businesses from scratch. My leadership helped save the Olympics from scandal and give our American athletes the chance to make us all proud, and they did," Romney said. "My leadership will end the Obama era and begin a new era of American prosperity."

He had a message for Obama: "Mr. President, you were elected to lead, you chose to follow, and now it's time for you to get out of the way!" And he jabbed at the president's 2008 campaign slogan, saying: "Together, we will build an America where 'hope' is a new job with a paycheck, not a faded word on an old bumper sticker."

Romney's victory in a large, diverse and expensive state showcased his campaign's overall financial and organizational strength and helped demonstrate that he can win in a state that plays an important role in the general election.

It was not an easy victory, despite the wide margin of victory.

After a win in New Hampshire, the South Carolina defeat left Romney's campaign panicked and it prompted his advisers to revamp his strategy.

He immediately went on the attack, assailing Gingrich's ties to Freddie Mac, the federally backed mortgage giant that played a significant role in the housing crisis, in a state that has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation.

Romney and his allies pummeled Gingrich on the airwaves, spending at least a combined $15 million on TV. And Florida marked the first time when Romney's official campaign ? instead of the third-party group run by outsiders ? went negative. Romney also delivered two strong debate performances here ? and denied Gingrich the big moments he had in debates in South Carolina.

Overall, the fight for Florida demonstrated Romney's campaign was prepared to handle defeat and bounce back strong.

He's looking ahead to next-up contests in Nevada, Minnesota, Colorado and elsewhere. And his advisers say he has no plans to let up on Gingrich.

The win has also energized Romney's donors, hundreds of descended on Tampa, assuming Romney would win. They packed a room in the convention center, driving a buoyant mood that echoed the night of Romney's New Hampshire win.

Together they helped Romney raise $24 million during the last three months of 2011, dwarfing all of GOP competitors.

It leaves Romney with nearly $20 million cash-on-hand to take forward, while his rivals struggle with debt and have little left over.

Romney took the stage Tuesday with four of his five children and several grandchildren. He was introduced by his wife, Ann.

A study based on more than 87,000 women and 47,000 men in the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, looks at whether there is a link between colon cancer and alcohol, and if so at what level of consumption, and the importance of a family history of the disease. A total of 1,801 cases of colon cancer were diagnosed during follow-up from 1980 onwards.

The authors results found that subjects with a family history, whose average alcohol intake was 30 or more grams per day (about 2 typical drinks by US standards or 4 UK units) had an increase in their risk of colon cancer. Those at greatest risk also ate the most red meat, smoked the most, and had the lowest intake of folate (suggesting they ate fewer green vegetables and cereals. Hence, these people have the most unhealthy lifestyles in general of the populations studied. There was not a significant association between alcohol consumption and colon cancer among subjects without a positive family history in this study.

Forum reviewers were concerned that the pattern of drinking (regularly or binge drinking) was not assessed, and that there was not a consistent increase in risk of cancer with greater alcohol intake found. Further, adequate folate intake was found to lower risk, with the highest risk for subjects with a positive family history of colon cancer, low levels of folate, and in the highest category of alcohol consumption, indicating the importance of other lifestyle facts such as a healthy diet.

The present study provides some support for an association between higher levels of alcohol intake and the risk of colon cancer among subjects with a positive family history of such cancer. It should be noted that there have been changes in the guidelines for screening for colon cancer (by endoscopy, with removal of pre-malignant tumours) and other preventive measures for people with a positive family history of colon cancer, making it hard to draw conclusions on data for colon cancer that is 30 years old. The new recommendation for screening frequency and age at initiation of screening are so different now. At least some of these cases would probably have been prevented if managed according to current guidelines. Such measures could modify the effects of all risk factors for colon cancer in future analyses.

Nintendo chief promises to do Wii U launch right (AP)

TOKYO ? Nintendo's chief is determined to get right the launch of its next game machine, Wii U, set for this year's holiday shopping season, and acknowledged Friday some mistakes with selling its 3DS handheld.

But Nintendo Co. President Satoru Iwata warned earnings for the fiscal year set to begin April will be the toughest ever for the Japanese manufacturer behind the Super Mario and Pokemon games.

Nintendo went against conventional wisdom with the original Wii in 2006. The quirky, cheap game console relied not on high-end graphics and complex buttons to lure in hardcore players, but on simple motion controls to lure in everyone.

Although the company successfully courted casual gamers with the Wii, it is now facing increased competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone and other devices that offer simple games. It had hoped to win new gamers through a 3-D handheld device. But sales were slow, and Nintendo slashed prices on the 3DS within six months.

Iwata's remarks come a day after it lowered its annual earnings forecast to a 65 billion yen ($844 million) loss, much larger than the 20 billion yen ($260 million) loss projected earlier. It posted a 77.62 billion yen profit the previous fiscal year.

Iwata blamed the strong yen, which erases overseas earnings, as well as the arrival of smartphones and other devices that offer gaming.

The higher yen slashed nearly 54 billion yen ($701 million) from the company's operating profit for the April-December period.

"I can see how the red ink may be perceived as abnormal," Iwata told analysts and reporters at a Tokyo hotel. "The environment has changed."

The failure of the 3DS handheld to take off with enough momentum during the last quarter of 2011 was one of the main reasons for the dismal results, according to Iwata.

The 3DS has gradually started to sell better, but it took a price cut in August. It still lacks a strong lineup of attractive software games, a key factor for a machine to succeed in a big way.

Iwata vowed the company will be better prepared when it introduces the Wii U home console during the 2012 year-end shopping season for a strong comeback.

He declined to give details such as pricing or what the software games available at that time might be.

But he said the Wii U will come with a strong game lineup at the launch as well as secure and safe Internet services that will offer players individual accounts.

The Wii U will come with new ways of playing that will almost make the term "home console" obsolete, Iwata said. It will also offer mobile gaming. The machine has a touch-panel controller.

Nintendo has long competed against rival game makers, such as Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. These days, all face the threat from hit devices like the iPad and iPhone from Apple Inc. that also offer games.

Iwata's comments also showed Nintendo is growing less cautious about the Internet, which in the past it had brushed off as mainly for hard-core gamers.

Kyoto-based Nintendo has built its reputation on making games fun to play for casual and newcomer players.

"We are going to put to use our bitter experience with the 3DS," said Iwata.

PM Saturday: Build This Rugged Iron Pipe Lamp

January 26, 2012 4:30 PM Text Size: A . A . A

1. PREP PARTS

Scrap ?-inch iron pipe and fittings make this stable, rugged lamp. Get a 12-inch nipple, three tee fittings, four 90-degree elbows, one 45-degree elbow, 11 close nipples, four pipe caps, a candelabra socket, a cord, a bulb, a worklight's shade, and a touch-dimmer switch. Use a cobalt bit to drill a 3/8-inch hole in a tee, opposite its center opening. Pull 18 inches of cord through the hole and the tee's center opening.

2. WIRE THE IRON

Screw together the 12-inch nipple, the 45-degree elbow fitting, and a close nipple. Fish the lamp cord through this assembly. Screw the open end of the 12-inch nipple into the drilled tee fitting's opening.

3. FINISH THE LAMP

Wire the lamp socket base to the cord at the nontee end of the 12-inch nipple. Make sure all electrical connections are insulated and not touching pipe. Gently pull the cord from its plug end, tightening up slack until the lamp socket base is even with the nipple's edge. Use a hose clamp to clip the worklight's shade to the 45-degree elbow.

4. GIVE IT LEGS

Assemble the lamp base using two tees, four 90-degree elbows, and 10 close nipples. Insert nipples into the openings of the tee and elbow fittings. Finger-tighten the connections. To make feet, screw the pipe-cap fittings to the nipples.

Screw in a bulb. Plug the cord into the touch dimmer and plug it into an outlet. Hit a pipe to turn it on.

Ratings: "Idol" repeat tops the night (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) ? Though the data is extremely approximate due to coverage of President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, preliminary numbers indicate that an "American Idol" repeat pushed Fox to a ratings win Tuesday night.

A repeat of Sunday night's "Idol" at 8 p.m. posted the night's highest numbers in the adults 18-49 demographic, scoring a 3.3 rating/9 share and 9.5 million total viewers. The episode was pushed out of primetime in much of the country Sunday due to the NFC championship game.

The State of the Union address, airing from 9 p.m. to 10:41 p.m. on the east coast, drew a 1.9/4 in the demographic and 5.3 million total viewers, giving Fox a top-rated 2.3/6 average in the demographic for the night.

CBS had the most-watched show, an "NCIS" repeat at 8 p.m., which scored a 2.0/5 in the demographic and 12.3 million viewers. The State of the Union address at 9 p.m. drew a 1.5/4 in the demographic and 7.1 million total viewers for CBS. Overall the network averaged 8.4 million viewers for the night.

NBC began the night with "The Biggest Loser" at 8 p.m., which pulled a 2.1/6 in the demographic and 6.3 million total viewers. The network had the most viewers in the demographic for Obama's speech. It earned NBC a 2.0/5 in the demographic and 7.1 million total viewers. Post-speech analysis scored a 1.2/3 in the demographic and 5.2 million total viewers.

ABC aired repeats throughout the night, with the exception of the address, which drew a 1.8/4 in the demographic and 7.1 million total viewers.

Vaccination program credited in fight against whooping cough

Facing an epidemic of whooping cough that led to the deaths of 10 infants in 2010, California public health officials launched a massive vaccination effort and public awareness campaign about the disease.

And on Tuesday, they announced the payoff: no deaths in 2011, a first in two decades. The number of whooping cough, or pertussis, cases also plummeted from about 9,154 in 2010 to 2,795 in 2011, according to the California Department of Public Health.

In Los Angeles County, the number of cases dropped from 1,395 in 2010 to 520 in 2011. Four of the deaths in the state occurred locally.

"Controlling an outbreak is huge," said Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director of infectious diseases for the state. "It really happens in a partnership."

The state worked closely with doctors, hospitals, schools and clinics to get more people vaccinated and to get pertussis identified and treated earlier, Chavez said.

Pertussis is a bacterial disease that infects the respiratory system. Children and adults may have severe coughing with a whooping sound at the end of a spasm. Infants may have a runny nose and a cough without the whoop sound.

Chavez said that the deaths can also be prevented if cases are identified and treated quickly, usually with antibiotics."To have gone through a year like 2011 with 3,000 cases and having no fatalities is pretty remarkable," he said.

Infants are the most vulnerable because they are not fully vaccinated until they are 6 months old. As a result, public health officials urged pediatricians to watch out for the disease and to get babies treated immediately after a diagnosis to improve their chances of survival.

"That is probably the most important thing," said Dr. James Cherry, a pediatrics professor at UCLA and an expert in pertussis. "If you get babies in hospitals, in ICUs, they are more likely to survive."

Babies often get pertussis from parents and others who have been misdiagnosed as having asthma or bronchitis, Cherry said. So in their vaccination efforts, state and local health departments focused on vaccinating people who were around infants, including pregnant and postpartum mothers, grandparents and older siblings.

The state also passed a law in 2010 requiring the immunization of students entering grades 7 to 12. Most children are vaccinated for pertussis, but it wanes after about five years. The vaccine is included in the DTaP inoculation, which also protects against tetanus and diphtheria.

"I don't think there was a lot of awareness of the transmission of this from older siblings," said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, Los Angeles County's director of public health.

Fielding said health officials throughout California need to continue being vigilant so the numbers don't increase again. "We have to make sure we don't let our guard down," he said.

Grant helps students stay in Ariz., start business

by Betty Beard - Jan. 7, 2012 07:49 PM
The Republic | azcentral.com

What started as a University of Arizona class project for two graduate students has now become a unique company that can help truckers all over the U.S. earn more money.

And the story behind the creation of the Tucson-based company, Post Bid Ship, shows not only that it can be a good idea to get innovative-minded people to come to Arizona but also to encourage them to stay and start a business.

The company was one of eight that received Arizona Innovation Challenge grants last year from the Arizona Commerce Authority. It snared $137,000.

Post Bid Ship sells unused space in semitrucks.

Trucks taking a product from Point A to Point B typically have to return with empty trailers about 70 percent of the time, which is an inefficient use of diesel fuel, driver time and wear and tear on the truck and roads, CEO Micky Thompson said.

So using an Internet-based automated system, the company lets shippers like Shamrock Foods Co., Safeway and others find empty spaces in trucks going the direction they need, when they need it.

The company already has about 600 trucking companies representing about 100,000 trucks involved. Post Bid Ship receives 1 percent of what the truck owner receives for carrying a load, such as $18 on a $1,800 cargo.

And the idea started as homework.

Thompson, now 37, moved from Tennessee three years ago to attend the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management to earn a master's of business administration degree. There he met fellow student Jarret Hamstreet, now 29, who had worked for a family trucking business in Oregon.

Together they developed a business plan for Post Bid Ship.

"We wondered why this had never been done before," Thompson said.

They graduated in May 2010 and received job offers in other states. But Thompson said Paul Portney, the dean of the Eller College, persuaded them to stay and to start the business.

"He stopped Jarret and I and said, 'We didn't bring you all the way to Arizona and educate you so you could leave and go to other states,' " Thompson said.

The pair landed about $300,000 of investments within months of graduating and last August began charging for their services and going commercial. They have 11 full-time employees.

"We own houses so we are pretty much settled," Thompson said. "We are staying."

Water pipe repair in Denver to slow traffic on University Blvd. over the weekend

A main water pipe project in southeast Denver this weekend will likely knot traffic as the work is done.

Workers will repair a section of pipe at the intersection of East Belleview Avenue and South University Boulevard, according to a Denver Water media release.

The work is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Friday and run through 5 a.m. Monday.

Southbound lanes of traffic on University will be closed and lengthy delays are expected between East Hampden and East Belleview avenues.

Drivers are asked to use alternate routes and avoid the construction area if possible.

Letter airs harassment claims against HP's ex-CEO (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd's efforts to impress an HP event hostess included showing her his checking-account balance holding over $1 million, according to a letter detailing the sexual harassment allegations that led to his ouster.

The letter was obtained late Thursday by The Associated Press after the Delaware Supreme Court ruled that Hurd's lawyers, who had attempted to keep it confidential, didn't show that disclosing it would violate California privacy rights. The ruling said information that is only "mildly embarrassing" is not protected from public disclosure.

The letter, it added, does not contain trade secrets about the Palo Alto-based technology company or non-public financial information. Some sentences concerning Hurd's family were ordered redacted.

Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred sent the letter last year on behalf of Jodie Fisher, who was hired as a contract employee to help with HP networking events and who later accused Hurd of sexual harassment.

Although an HP investigation did not find any evidence to support the harassment claim, it uncovered inaccurate expense reports for his outings with Fisher. Hurd was ultimately forced out in August 2010. He now works as co-president at rival Oracle Corp.

Allred alleged in the letter that, while Fisher was ostensibly hired an HP event hostess in late 2007, she was really brought on to accompany Hurd to HP events held out of town. Throughout 2008 and 2009, Hurd made it clear he expected to have a sexual relationship with Fisher, using his "status and authority as CEO of HP," Allred alleged.

Allred claimed that Hurd made several sexual advances toward Fisher, which Fisher rejected. In 2008, while walking with Fisher in Madrid, Hurd stopped at an ATM and showed her his checking-account balance "to impress her," according to the letter.

After Fisher rejected him a final time in October 2009, she was not hired for any future HP events, Allred alleged.

Allred also alleged that in March 2008, Hurd told Fisher that HP was likely to purchase technology services vendor EDS. HP announced the $13 billion acquisition in May of that year.

HP shareholder Ernesto Espinoza had sued to have the letter unsealed. Hurd's attorney, Amy Wintersheimer, said his lawyers had requested that the letter be kept confidential because "it is filled with inaccuracies."

"The truth is, there never was any sexual harassment, which HP's investigation confirmed, and there never was any sexual relationship, which Ms. Fisher has confirmed," Wintersheimer said in a statement.

Both Allred and Hewlett-Packard Co. had no comment on the letter's contents.
